Updates from the Capitol

SB 532 (Fasano), relating to public corruption, increases the penalites for public officials misusing their public office to further a crime. The bill passed the Senate Rules Subcommittee on Ethic and Elections by a 12-1 vote.
 
SB 998 (Simmons), relating to private property rights (Bert Harris Act), passed the Community Affairs Committee unanimously. Next stop is the Judiciary Committee.
  
Bill Prohibiting Serverance Pay Passes First Committee
SB 88 (Gaetz) was amended today in the Senate Community Affairs Committee to prohibit severance pay provisions in employment contracts and otherwise. This would apply to all contracts and agreements entered into after July 1, 2011. The bill also provides standards for any bonuses provided to government employees. The League testified in opposition to the bill.
 
Bill Filed To Repeal Local Business Tax Statute
HB 4195 (O'Toole) would repeal the statute that authorizes cities to impose local business taxes. The repeal of this statute would have a substantial adverse fiscal impact on cities. The bill was filed March 3 and has not yet been referred to any committees. No Senate companion has yet been filed.
