Florida League of Cities Continues Quality of Life Campaign

Florida cities have a wonderful opportunity to reinforce their importance in the daily lives of citizens. A new series of public service announcements, developed by the Florida League of Cities for use by Florida cities, illustrates how cities are vital to our state's quality of life. This series of video messages is intended to remind Floridians of all the ways cities and the public services they provide enrich their lives daily.

"Most people focus their political energies on what's happening in Washington, D.C. or in Tallahassee, but in fact it is our cities that have the most direct impact on our daily lives," said John Marks, president, Florida League of Cities and mayor of Tallahassee. "Service delivery sometimes goes unnoticed by the general public. Everything from effective police and fire safety and efficient garbage collection to well-maintained roads designed with well-timed traffic lights are among the most important city services provided to citizens."

The Florida League of Cities released the compelling video messages for distribution on their Facebook page and Web site, as well as distributed them to cities for their Web sites across Florida. The League is also submitting the messages as public service announcements to Florida broadcast and cable television stations and is making them available to city-operated television stations across the state. What our actions say matters

It’s hard for someone on the other side of the state to know just how this all played out. One can only use words like “striking” or “stunning” to describe the new zoning approved by the Miami Commission on Thursday.

The approval, as I understand it, authorizes the development of a pair of 500-foot-tall electronic signs associated with a new parking garage and, ultimately, additional retail space near the Arsht Center. Five-hundred-foot-tall signs... think something well over 40 stories tall, or as tall as the tallest buildings in my own home town of Tampa.
