August 13, 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Are you thinking about running for a seat in the Florida Legislature? In 2010, 24 seats in the Florida House of Representatives and nine seats in the Florida Senate will be open because of term limits. This huge turnover provides a unique opportunity for the Florida League of Cities to help shape the face of the Florida Legislature well into the future.

To help you succeed in a bid for a legislative seat, the League is sponsoring the Institute for Civic Leadership training for any municipal official considering running for an open legislative seat in 2010. As a local elected official, you have a proven track record of civic involvement, seeking solutions to problems and dedication to public service. The Institute for Civic Leadership is designed to help educate municipal officials about critical policy issues affecting Florida. Municipal officials will be given extensive training in key political and campaign strategies so they can be more successful candidates. Attendance at any of the Institute for Civic Leadership training seminars is free to all elected municipal officials considering running for a seat in the Florida Legislature. The Institute for Civic Leadership program consists of a series of workshops featuring issue experts and prominent campaign consultants who share their expertise of statewide issues and campaign strategies with the candidates.

In addition, attendees receive a comprehensive campaign “toolkit” that includes detailed information on the key phases and elements of a legislative campaign. This toolkit also includes all the necessary legal forms, templates for fundraising letters, scripts for phone banks, information on targeting voters, advice on dealing with the media and other important strategic campaign information.

The League is sponsoring a “meet and greet” reception for any municipal official who is considering running for the Legislature. The reception will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on August 13. Please RSVP to Rose Hall, (850) 701-3655. For more information regarding the Institute for Civic Leadership, contact Scott Dudley, (850) 222-9684.
