On Monday, March 21, the League will hold a Legislative Briefing from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in Sittig Hall. The League’s lobbyists will provide status reports on the League’s legislative action agenda priorities. You’ll learn the latest on these and other key issues affecting municipalities. Following the briefing, there will be a reception for all registrants beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, located just across Kleman Plaza from the League office. Share ideas with your city colleagues and legislators in a relaxed setting before the next day's more formal, focused advocacy begins.

The National League of Cities and the Public Technology Institute will be hosting a webinar on Thursday, September 13 at 2:00 pm ET titled “How a Municipal Network Can Help Your City.”

Some of the fastest broadband networks are being built by local governments, according to a recent report titled "Broadband at the Speed of Light" from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and the Benton Foundation. A community run network is a useful tool for several reasons. It can provide much faster speeds and higher levels of service to city departments, local businesses, and residents. These networks lower the prices for everyone by creating real competition and often lead to efficiencies in the operation of a variety of city services, including public safety, education, healthcare and transportation. Additionally, municipal networks can help encourage the development of business in the community creating economic development opportunities.

 

The webinar will features cities who have successfully implemented municipal broadband networks and will highlight what their experiences have been. While these example might not be replicable for all cities, the lessons learned here can encourage all local governments to strategically think about what is feasible as a long-term solution with regard to broadband access given existing limitations such as state regulations and industry monopolies.

Amendment 4 - How Will It Affect Cities

The Florida Legislature has sponsored five constitutional amendments dealing with property taxes that will appear on the 2012 general election ballot. One of the amendments, Amendment 4, makes several significant changes to the state’s property tax system. The amendment changes the current assessment limit on commercial property, vacant property and second homes; gives first-time home buyers an additional homestead exemption; and allows the Legislature to prohibit increases in the assessed value of a property if the just value of the property decreases.

 

As election day nears, it is important that cities and their citizens learn more about this proposed constitutional amendment and the impact it may have on their city if it is adopted.

The 2012 campaign season is finally over---except for the crying. The newly elected members of the Florida House and Senate have been holding committee meetings, filing bills and generally conducting the business of the state since November 2012. Fourteen new Senators (12 of whom have previous legislative experience) out of 40, and 43 new House members (four of whom have some sort of legislative experience) out of 120 will descend on Tallahassee for the 60 day 2013 legislative session.

Municipal officials from around the state are invited to participate in this 1½ day event where city officials meet with Members of Florida’s Congressional Delegation to discuss important issues that impact municipalities. This year 27 city officials participated in the fly-in and discussed surface transportation authorization, maintaining funding for CDBG, and the Marketplace Equity Act, which would set up a mechanism for sales tax on online purchases.
