City History:
Incorporated 1885. Major St. Clair Abrams founded Tavares in 1880. Tavares was named for a Spanish ancestor of Major Abrams and is Portuguese for “the Hub.” Abrams was in hopes that it would become the capital of Florida. Tavares was elected as the county seat for the newly formed Lake County in August 1888. Following the election, Henry H. Duncan, who was appointed clerk of the circuit court in July 1, 1887, secretly moved the records from the temporary seat of Bloomfield to Tavares. This was to prevent the founder of Bloomfield, W.D. Mendenhall, from obtaining a writ of mandamus to block the moving of the records to Tavares. The Town of Tavares was re-chartered as a "City" in 1943, and a committee appointed by the City Council again revised the city’s charter in 1984.
