Incorporated 1926. A settlement was established here in 1870 by William A. Smith, but was given no name. In 1882, George W. Hull, a Canadian by birth, came here from Duluth, Minnesota. He made a survey and map of the town and, at the instigation of his wife, gave it the name of Minneola, a name which is found in several states and is a Dakota Indian word meaning "many waters." The name was also applied by the Hulls to the local lake. Minneola was originally in Sumter County, until the boundary was moved.
